Ten Jobs That Pay $80,000 Per Year …

What do Lauren Bush’s engagement ring, and the Icon CJ3B Army Jeep have in common? They’re two of the things you can buy with $80,000. And while most working stiffs can only dream of plunking down that kind of cash, the median family income in the U.S. brings in only around $50,000 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) there are some career tracks that can bring those luxury visions a little closer to reality.

Here are ten jobs that earn at least $80,000, according to online salary database PayScale.com, all in industries that are expected to grow through 2018.

01. Commercial Jet Pilot
Median Income: $89,600

The sky’s literally the limit if you’ve always dreamed of flying for a living. According the International Airline Pilots Association, there are many paths to the cockpit but you must have a combination of pilot certificates and ratings, as well as flight experience, and a great attitude. Veterans of the armed services are particularly in demand due to the military’s excellent training and the well-rounded education such a background provides. Bonus: the military route won’t cost a thing.

02. Clinical Trial Manager
Median Income: $88,800

From doctors and nurses, to teachers and statisticians, clinical research professionals can come from a wide variety of careers. Training often happens on the job – including everything from testing drugs, to medical equipment, or other biological products. While breaking into the lucrative field of clinical research does require a Bachelor’s degree, pursuing a clinical research curriculum can be done online or through a community college with flexible hours, according to the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCra).

03. Chief Lobbyist
Median Income: $88,700

Public relations professionals take note: if you’re passionate about a cause or special interest your skills are perfectly suited to a lobbying firm. Lobbyists can be found on the staffs of corporations, industry trade-organizations, unions, or public interest groups. The global demand for oil and gas continues unabated. 07. Six Sigma Black Belt Project Manager

You won’t have to master the martial arts, but you will have to pass a number of exams on your way to obtaining a Six Sigma Black Belt. This business management strategy is used in a variety of industries from education and government, to healthcare and manufacturing, as a standard of quality to improve processes. 08. Certified Nurse Midwife

With increasing demand for natural and home-based childbirth, certified nurse midwives provide a holistic approach to delivering babies, working both with obstetricians as well as on their own. But their work doesn’t stop with childbirth. Midwives can provide continuing care and counseling to women of all ages, according to the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM). Most are registered nurses who have graduated from a nurse-midwifery education program, and are certified by the ACNM.

Sears Holdings is hiring on both its corporate and its operations side of their business. There are openings for about 1,800 salaried positions and roughly 20,000 hourly ones, reports Fortune.
Those jobs are spread over a broad spectrum of skills, including home services, Sears and Kmart distribution centers, as well as Sears auto centers. These opening will provide opportunities for job seekers with backgrounds ranging from experience operating a store to running an e-commerce site.
When you apply, those screening are looking for future employees who can provide an edge. The open positions are diverse. Some are in the Lowe’s retail stores, some in the Lowe’s office, and some in the Lowe’s distribution centers. You could be doing direct customer service or overseeing content in a warehouse.
Many of the jobs are seasonal ones; however, given that Lowe’s has an outstanding brand name in home improvement as well as appliance sales and it ranks No. 42 on the Fortune 500 companies, this experience is an enhancer for any resume.

    Up to 600,000 Holiday Jobs Need to Be Filled NOW! ..

    It may not be your ultimate dream job, and it may not come with benefits, but as many as 600,000 new holiday jobs are opening up this season, and many employers estimate they’ll keep about 10 percent of the temporary workers on for full-time positions after the last presents have been unwrapped and the last New Year’s toast has been made.

    But if you want to take a seasonal crack at employment, you better act fast, as in right now. As soon as you’re done reading this, arm yourself with resumes, fix yourself up, run down to the nearest location of the businesses listed below, and apply in person. Although an estimated 150,900 new positions have been filled already (that’s three times as many as the same time last year) many companies, especially retailers, are currently in a frenzy to have enough employees in place for Black Friday.
    The following companies are the most likely to be in need of employees immediately:
    1. Macy’s:
    They plan on taking an additional 65,000 workers this year for part-time positions in retail sales, gift wrapping, stocking, etc. Last year at this time, Sharon Montoya was so desperate to find holiday work she applied to Macy’s for a gift wrapping position, but when the HR interviewer saw how well-dressed she was and that she had a college degree, they put her on the sales floor, which paid more. After Christmas they offered her a full time position managing the department, and now she has moved up to a buyer’s position, and gets to be home with her family on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
    2. UPS:
    This delivery company is planning on hiring about 50,000 new employees to cover the holiday rush caused by increasing numbers of online shoppers. Most temporary positions start around $10 per hour, but can go higher. They include driver helpers, package sorters, etc. “Ted,” a UPS driver not at liberty to speak for the company, says he’ll happily recommend a good assistant for full time work if he or she can really pull their weight.
    3. Best Buy:
    This, one of the last remaining big box appliance and electronics chains, expects to hire 39,000 seasonal workers. That’s the most they’ve hired since 2006. A savvy, working knowledge of computers, electronics or appliances could secure you a position after the holidays, as helpful, informative sales associates are always in demand.
    4. Toys ‘R’ Us:
    In addition to their large destination stores, the company is opening 6,000 “pop up,” or temporary locations in vacant mall spaces all over the country. This holiday season they’ll be hiring an additional 35,000 managers, sales associates, cashiers, shelf stockers, various customer service helpers and back-room stockers.
    5. JCPenney:
    They plan on bringing on 30,000 temporary workers to help with sales, stocking, gift wrap, cleaning, straightening and hanging, check out, etc. They’re also known for recognizing talented, dedicated workers and keeping them on after the holidays.
    6. Michaels:
    This popular crafts chain intends to bring on 10,000 seasonal workers, up from 7,500 last year. Those who do crafts as a hobby can make them pay off this holiday season, as the most likely to be hired are those who know how to use their products.
    7. Hickory Farms:
    This is another retailer that boosts its mall profile with “pop up” stores around the holidays. They will be filling at least 10,000 positions as gift wrappers, cashiers, sales associates and sample personnel.
    Other companies that plan to bring on at least 1,000 additional workers this holiday season include:

    Know that you won’t be alone in applying for these jobs, but the one characteristic that will make you stand out from all the others is flexibility — which in this case translates into a willingness to work early in the morning, late at night and on the holidays themselves. State right up front that you will work Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Dec. 26 and New Year’s Eve, even Christmas Day, if they’re open. Students who want to earn extra money during their holiday vacations but need travel time and don’t want work on the actual holidays, are not likely to get those coveted positions.
    Don’t pay attention to the nay-sayers who tell you it’s already too late. At least these companies will have a favorable impression and your resume on file, so that if any of the employees they already hired can’t fulfill their obligations at the last minute, you can be their go-to guy or girl.

    What Are the Fastest Growing Careers?

    In attempting to ascertain which career fields will expand most rapidly in the coming years, while it’s certainly possible just to guess on the basis of anecdote (“my sister got hired as a dog groomer, and the people she talked to said there are more and more jobs like that opening up”) and common sense observations (“those virtual reality games seem really cutting edge; I’ll bet there will be a lot of jobs designing those”), what’s a lot better is to do some serious research and number crunching.

    This is exactly what the good people at the Bureau of Labor Statistics do as a part of their job. The Bureau’s “Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-2011 Edition” is an excellent source of information and analysis concerning job trends.

    One of its most valuable features is its detailed listings of job categories and their expected increase or decrease. These projections are made on a decade-long basis, with the most recent being for the 2008-2018 period.

    As a starting point for discussion, here are the top 20 such occupational categories, and the number of jobs they are projected to add over this ten year period:

    Registered nurses: 581,500

    Home health aides: 460,900

    Customer service representatives: 399,500

    Combined food preparation and serving workers, including fast food: 394,300

    Personal and home care aides: 375,800

    Retail salespersons: 374,700

    Office clerks, general: 358,700

    Accountants and auditors: 279,400

    Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants: 276,000

    Postsecondary teachers: 256,900

    Construction laborers: 255,900

    Elementary school teachers, except special education: 244,200

    Truck drivers, heavy and tractor-trailer: 232,900

    Landscaping and groundskeeping workers: 217,100

    Bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks: 212,400

    Executive secretaries and administrative assistants: 204,400

    Management analysts: 178,300

    Computer software engineers, applications: 175,100

    Receptionists and information clerks: 172,900

    Carpenters: 165,400

    Now let’s take a look at a few things that are striking about the expected job trends:

    1. Health care jobs are on the upswing.

    A whopping four of the top nine jobs on the list are in the medical field. Various others that made the top 20 overlap with the medical field. (Hospitals, medical practices, health insurance companies, etc. certainly need bookkeepers, secretaries, and receptionists and the like.) If you have any interest, any aptitude at all for working in the health care field, your prospects for employment are excellent.

    2. Jobs that can’t be outsourced are more likely to increase.

    Note how many of the jobs on the list require being physically present. One partial exception is number 3 on the list, “customer service representatives.” A certain percentage of those jobs can be outsourced, if we’re talking about phone and e-mail customer service. English-speakers (or alarmingly often, people who only fit in that category in the loosest sense) located anywhere in the world are now pegged to do those jobs.

    But for the most part, the jobs that are increasing the fastest are those one has to be present to do. To be an in-home health care worker, to work the counter at a fast food restaurant, to do the landscaping on a piece of property, one has to be physically at that location, not merely connected in some cyber/virtual/high tech/telecommunications/computer manner from some other country or continent.

    3. High tech jobs don’t fare as well as expected.

    If you were to ask people on the street who’ve never seen this data what jobs they think are increasing the fastest, probably most would pick all or mostly computer and technology-related jobs—”software this,” “computer that,” “systems whatever.”

    But that’s not reflected at all on the actual list. Granted, elementary school teachers, accountants, office clerks, etc. use computers and related technology as tools in their work, but you have to go all the way down to number 18, “computer software engineers, applications,” to find a truly “tech” job.

    4. “Low end” jobs are increasing the most.

    Of the 20 occupational categories on the list, only five typically require as much as a bachelor’s degree, and only one or at most two typically require more education than a bachelor’s degree. Zero of the 20 pay median annual full time wages of $100,000 or more. Only five pay even $50,000. Seven pay less than $25,000. So we’re talking about a lot of jobs where even people who are lucky enough to be employed will likely be doing plenty of moonlighting, need a partner also working full time, have to scrape just to get by, or multiple of the above.

    This is not to say higher education isn’t still hugely advantageous for getting a “good” job, but as far as just getting a job at all in the fastest growing fields, you typically would be better off stopping at a high school or associate’s degree, and focusing on internships and on the job training.

    What this last point especially underscores is that there is a big difference between jobs that are increasing and jobs that are worth seeking. The fact that a lot of Xs will be needed in the next few years is merely one of many factors to take into account in deciding one’s future. You also have to look at how much a job pays, how intrinsically interesting and fulfilling you would find it, how dangerous it is, what ethical issues it would raise for you, and on and on.

    But it certainly helps to know if a given job is dying out or on the rise. And the projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics are quite useful in that regard.

    A Guide to the Best Retirement Jobs

    More and more people are deciding to put off their retirement, usually due to economic necessity. Social Security doesn’t provide a lavish lifestyle after all generally just enough to avoid abject poverty. Some workers have seen their expected pensions fail to come through when their employers went under. Some have had downturns in the stock market or other investments take a bite out of what was supposed to provide a comfortable retirement.

    Some older workers are lucky enough to already have a job, and so they simply choose to hold onto it. But there are also many people in their 50s, 60s, and even beyond who are on the job market, unemployed but looking.

    Sometimes the most promising route for an older person is not to try to convince someone else to hire them, but to start an enterprise of their own. With decades of life experience and work experience, an older person likely has many skills that could be the foundation for their own business.

    This can be a traditional brick and mortar business, but doesn’t have to be. There is also money to be made through eBay and the Internet, or a booth at a farmers market or street fair. Someone who does crafts, sewing, freelance writing, gardening or small scale farming, etc. can take advantage of numerous outlets to sell their wares, and not have to worry about satisfying an employer.

    2. Consulting

    A specific form of self-employment is consulting. Someone who spent a long career in a certain field, but is no longer working full time in it, could be an ideal consultant for that field. This is a great way to put accumulated knowledge to work in assisting those following in one’s footsteps.

    3. Sticking around one’s last job
    Whether by the employer’s choice or the employee’s choice, there are times an older worker isn’t destined to remain in their present job. However, this needn’t be an all or nothing thing. According to a study by Cornell University, 75% of employers report that they would be willing to keep their older employees at reduced hours who otherwise would be leaving their employ entirely. 26% would allow those part time employees to retain their health benefits, and 40% would allow them to start drawing their pension if they kept working part time past retirement age.

    Most of these employers, though, don’t make this known unless the subject comes up, and most workers don’t know to inquire about such an option when they step down from their full time position.

    4. Online job search engines
    Older workers, just like anyone else on the job market, have nearly endless resources available online nowadays. Sites like Monster, Career Builder, and Craigslist post thousands if not millions of available jobs. These and other sites also have areas to post resumes so one can be found by potential employers instead of having to find them, as well as articles, posting forums, etc. to help with all stages of job hunting.

    JPMorganChase announced it will complete hiring 10,000 new employees by the end of 2010.

    America’s Highest-Paying White-Collar Jobs

    Here’s where to make the most without leaving a desk.

    imageIf you want to keep getting raises, get promoted to senior management. As tough as the economy has been, people in executive positions saw their paychecks increase by an average of 2.2% this year, to $99,700. That’s according to data just released by Compdata, a national compensation survey and consulting firm in Olathe, Kan.
    Compdata looked at base salaries for 26 senior management jobs below C-level. For the sixth consecutive year, commercial lending directors take the top spot, with the highest average paychecks. They are earning $132,500 in 2010, up from $128,600 last year. Ranking second on the list, general managers are making $124,800 this year, up from $118,300 last year.
    “In an economy where many organizations are implementing salary freezes and reductions just to get by, it’s encouraging to see salaries for many jobs rising, even if some increases are very modest,” said Amy Kaminski, director of marketing for Compdata Surveys. “As industries begin to recover, it will be more important than ever for companies to make an effort to hold onto their most valuable asset–their employees. Offering a balanced yet competitive compensation package will be the key to employee retention as the economy grows.”
    Even the list’s lowest-paying jobs are paying more than last year. Human resources managers and advertising and public relations managers rank at the bottom of the group of white-collar jobs, with average salaries of $74,900 and $73,300 respectively, but both are enjoying small year-over-year increases.
    Elsewhere on the list, mortgage lending directors made 7.1% less this year than they did in 2005, but their average base salary of $100,300 was up a healthy 5.1% from last year. The biggest winners over a five-year period are finance directors, who are earning 37.9%, or $37,300, more this year than in 2005, and engineering directors, whose paychecks have grown 15%, or $19,700, in the same period. 
    Of the 26 jobs included in the survey, only four national sales managers, accounting directors, marketing directors, and systems and programming managers are earning less in 2010 than last year. Four others–development officers, mortgage lending directors, plant engineering managers, and advertising and public relations managers have seen their paychecks shrink from 2005, but have done better since 2009.
